Dr. Robert Kohn

Biography

Robert Kohn, M.D., M.Phil., is a Professor of Practice in Epidemiology at Brown University’s School of Public Health. With extensive training in psychiatry, he completed his residency at Brown University, followed by a fellowship in psychiatric epidemiology at Columbia University. Dr. Kohn has a distinguished career as the Director of the Brown University World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Mental Health Epidemiology and as the founder and Director of the Brown University Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship from 1997 to 2017. His research interests focus primarily on psychiatric epidemiology and geriatric psychiatry, with specific emphasis on cultural psychiatry and global mental health. Dr. Kohn has conducted international studies examining the prevalence and impact of psychiatric disorders in various populations, including studies related to disasters, immigration, stigma, and the effects of social class on mental health. His contributions to the understanding of mental health in older adults have also included research on the predictors of psychiatric disorders in aging populations and the psychological impact of major life stressors. Over the years, he has served as a consultant for the Pan American Health Organization and the WHO, focusing on the mental health repercussions of suicide and treatment gaps in various countries. He has published numerous articles, edited volumes, and reports that significantly contribute to advancing knowledge in the field of mental health and epidemiology.
