Dr. Robert Lee

Biography

Robert J. Lee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology: Head and Neck Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He holds a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Pennsylvania, earned in 2008, and a BS in Molecular Biology from the University of Pittsburgh, obtained in 2003. Dr. Lee's research focuses on the physiology of epithelial cells lining the upper and lower airways, particularly in the context of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and cystic fibrosis (CF). His work involves understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind airway diseases and identifying novel therapeutic targets. He utilizes real-time optical measurements to study signaling pathways related to airway function and employs close collaborations with clinical physicians to translate laboratory findings into clinical applications. Dr. Lee's research has significant implications for public health, as CRS affects a substantial portion of the population and represents a major healthcare burden. His recent investigations into the role of taste receptors in airway physiology have unveiled critical insights into mucociliary clearance and innate immunity.
