Robert Levinthal is an Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary. He received his PhD in City Planning with specializations in Environmental Planning and Landscape Land Use Design from the University of Pennsylvania. Levinthal is a graduate of UPenn's MLA program and has been recognized as a Landscape Architecture Foundation Fellow and as a finalist for the National Olmsted Scholar award. Before entering academia, he served as an Agroforestry Extension Agent with the U.S. Peace Corps in Senegal. His research and practice focus on 'Mega-eco Projects', which are regionally scaled ecological restoration and construction endeavors. In 2022, Levinthal partnered with the Senegalese Department of Water and Forestry and other organizations in an interdisciplinary and multinational collaboration called the Dakar Green Belt Blue Green Infrastructure Network. This initiative won the United Nations Environment Programme competition titled Generation Restoration Cities. Levinthal is driven to work with communities to develop creative, landscape-based solutions that simultaneously address climate change, biodiversity loss, and improve human well-being.
