Biography

Robert McGinn is Professor (Teaching) Emeritus in Management Science Engineering at Stanford University. He earned his B.S. in Unified Science Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology in 1963, his M.S. in Mathematics from Stanford in 1965, and his Ph.D. in Philosophy Humanities from Stanford in 1969. His research focuses on the social, cultural, ethical, and policy issues that arise from developments in science and technology, with a particular emphasis on applied ethics in engineering and the ethical questions surrounding the diffusion of technological innovations in society. He authored the book "Ethical Engineer: Contemporary Concepts Cases" published in 2018 and has contributed to various scholarly journals. Throughout his career, McGinn directed the Science Society Program and served on the executive board of the Science, Technology, Society (STS) Program, focusing on undergraduate education in engineering and ethical issues related to nanotechnology. He has received numerous awards including the Tau Beta Pi Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the Dinkelspiel Award for Exceptional Contributions to Undergraduate Education.
