Biography

Holder of a doctorate from the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Renaissance at François-Rabelais University, Robert Mélançon has been a professor in the Department of French Studies at the University of Montreal since 1972. An educator, researcher, essayist, translator, editor, and poet, his diverse career has earned him significant recognition both nationally and internationally. Notably, he focuses on Renaissance poetry, having produced works on Petrarch, Montaigne, Jodelle, Marguerite de Navarre, and Joachim du Bellay. He has also explored 20th-century French literature, preparing critical editions of Francis Ponge’s works and deepening studies on authors such as Jacques Roubaud and André Malraux. He is recognized as an inspired communicator of Quebec literature, having published a book titled 'What is a Quebec Classic?' and edited collections of poems. Over the past three decades, he has guided numerous theses and participated in countless conferences. Outside the university, he has distinguished himself as a poet with 11 collections to his name, including 'Peinture aveugle' and 'Le Paradis des apparences.' He has been awarded the Governor General's Award twice and the Victor-Barbeau Prize in 2003 for his essays on literature and the Alain-Grandbois Prize in 2005 for poetry.
