Biography

Bob Morrissey teaches early American frontier history and environmental history. His recent book 'People Ecotone: Environment Indigenous Power Center of Early America' focuses on environmental cultural history in the tallgrass prairie region of North America during the pre-modern period. This work was awarded the Hal K. Rothman Prize from the Environmental History Association. Between 2018 and 2020, he was the Bob Mellon Faculty Fellow in Environmental Humanities at the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, leading a collaborative team in programming, research, and curriculum development. He contributes to the Reclaiming Stories project, aimed at revitalizing Indigenous knowledge and practices among the Miami and Peoria communities. Morrissey teaches courses on early America, environmental history, and the American West, incorporating special projects using the University of Illinois collections. He is a recognized University Scholar for 2024 and currently serves as the Associate Dean for Technology and Online Learning in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research interests include the U.S. Colonial Atlantic World, Environmental History, Borderlands of the U.S. West, and Native American History.
