Biography

Dr. Newberry completed his undergraduate education at the University of Texas at Austin in 2011, receiving a B.S. in Biochemistry through the Dean's Scholars Honors Program and a B.A. in Plan II through the Honors Program. He conducted undergraduate research with Professors Eric Anslyn and Lauren Webb. Dr. Newberry earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Biology in 2016 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the guidance of Professor Ronald Raines, where he was recognized as an ACS Graduate Fellow and an HHMI Teaching Fellow. After earning his Ph.D., Dr. Newberry pursued postdoctoral training in molecular biophysics with Professor William DeGrado at the University of California, San Francisco. There, he received the NIH Pathway Independence Award, which supported his return to the University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor in early 2022. His research focuses on proteins as the main machines of the cell, particularly in the context of protein misfolding, which is linked to prevalent diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The Newberry lab aims to address these challenges using interdisciplinary approaches that integrate chemistry and biology to understand protein misfolding at an atomic detail.
