Biography

Robert Nicholls is a Professor of Coastal Engineering at the University of Southampton. He engages in research on coastal and climate issues, collaborating with various departments including Oceanography and Geography. His main research focus is on long-term coastal issues, particularly the impacts of climate change and adaptation strategies, with a strong emphasis on sea-level rise. His work includes global-scale assessments and major themes on densely populated deltaic areas that are critical in addressing contemporary problems anticipated to intensify in the coming decades. He has been involved in several international assessments with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Nicholls received the Roger Revelle Medal in 2008 for his outstanding contributions to ocean sciences. He co-led the World Climate Research Programme Grand Challenge on 'Regional sea-level change and coastal impacts' from 2014 to 2022. Additionally, he has organized major conferences focused on sea level and has been actively involved in the American Society of Civil Engineers Coastal Engineering Research Council, which organizes the International Coastal Engineering conferences.
