Biography

Robert Normandeau is a prominent composer primarily dedicated to acousmatic music, which he describes as 'cinema for the ear'. His work transcends traditional musical boundaries by exploring sound spatialization, crafting immersive sound environments. Since 1999, he has served as a professor of electroacoustic composition at the Université de Montréal, where he founded the Spatialization Sound Research Group (GRIS) in 2008. Normandeau has developed innovative spatialization tools such as SpatGRIS and ControlGRIS, enabling complex sound diffusion across speaker arrays. He has been recognized with three Opus Awards for contemporary music, received two Masque Awards for his theatrical compositions, and won international prizes including the Golden Nica from Ars Electronica. With a doctorate in electroacoustic composition from the Université de Montréal, his approach to music integrates rich sound material and artistic intention. His recent projects include creating immersive compositions for multichannel speaker domes and leading research initiatives focused on sound perception and innovative compositional tools.
