Biography

Robert T. Sauer is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. With a PhD obtained in 1979 from Harvard University and a BA in Biophysics from Amherst College in 1972, Dr. Sauer devoted his academic career to the study of intracellular proteolytic machines that are responsible for protein-quality control and homeostasis. His research focused on the intricate relationship between protein structure, function, and sequence folding, particularly involving molecular machines that degrade and remodel proteins through ATP-dependent reactions. Dr. Sauer utilized experimental tools spanning biochemistry, single-molecule biophysics, structural biology, protein design engineering, and molecular genetics to explore these mechanisms and their biological significance.
