Biography

Robert Schooley's research program integrates wildlife conservation, landscape ecology, and ecological restoration to advance knowledge in the applied maintenance and recovery of biodiversity. His focus is on understanding the effects of environmental patchiness and human land-use on species communities to promote sustainable ecosystems. He combines observational and experimental field studies with statistical and spatial analyses. Currently, his lab investigates the causes and consequences of shrub encroachment in the Chihuahuan Desert, conducting long-term studies that examine consumer population dynamics and trophic interactions of mammals. His research assesses feedbacks that trigger and reinforce landscape change and habitat-dependent herbivory. Additionally, he evaluates biodiversity and ecosystem services in response to extensive management efforts by agencies to remove shrubs and restore desert grasslands. His research is funded by institutions such as NSF, USDA NIFA, and the Fish and Wildlife Service.
