Biography

Robert Simcoe is a Professor at the MIT Kavli Institute, where he has been the director since 2019. He specializes in observational astrophysics with a particular emphasis on the chemistry of galaxies and intergalactic matter in the early universe. Simcoe began his academic journey at Princeton, earning an A.B. in Astrophysical Sciences in 1997, followed by a Ph.D. in Astronomy from Caltech in 2003. He joined the MIT Physics faculty in 2006 and has been the Principal Investigator for the FIRE (Folded-port InfraRed Echellette) infrared spectrometer, an essential instrument at the 6.5 meter Magellan telescopes. Throughout his career, he has received significant recognition, including the Alfred P. Sloan foundation research fellowship in 2009 and the upcoming 2024 Muhlmann Award. Simcoe's work on FIRE has facilitated groundbreaking discoveries and provided crucial insights into astrophysical phenomena, including the classification of faint astronomical objects and the study of supermassive black holes. He has actively mentored numerous early career researchers and contributed to the development of major instrumentation programs funded by the National Science Foundation, totaling over $10 million.
