Biography

Robert L. Smith is the Altarum/ERIM Russell D. O’Neil Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan in the Department of Industrial & Operations Engineering. He has taught courses in stochastic processes, queueing systems, and dynamic programming. His research interests focus on optimization and complex systems using global optimization methods, as well as decision making and planning across various forecast horizons. He is the Director of the Dynamic Systems Optimization Laboratory at the University of Michigan. Dr. Smith has received several awards, including the Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award from the University of Michigan's College of Engineering and the Research Excellence Award. He has served as an Associate Editor for Operations Research and Management Science, and he is a published author of over one hundred peer-reviewed publications.
