Biography

Robert Speel is an Associate Professor in the Political Science program at Penn State Behrend and has been associated with the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University since 2006. He earned his PhD and MA from Cornell University and his BA from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Speel directs the Public Policy Initiative and his teaching and research interests include American politics, elections, voting behavior, state and urban politics, Congress, the presidency, public policy, and ethnic and racial politics in the context of Canadian politics. His book, "Changing Patterns of Voting in the Northern United States", published by Penn State University Press, examines the creation of the regional divide between Red States and Blue States in the United States. His ongoing research focuses on regional movements and regional voting behavior within the U.S. At TMU, he teaches courses such as Washington D.C.: Seat of U.S. Government and Canadian-American Relations. Dr. Speel has received numerous awards for his teaching excellence and contributions to undergraduate program leadership, including the George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching.
