Biography

Robert Spoo is the Leonard L. Milberg ’53 Professor of Irish Letters at Princeton University. He previously served as Chapman Distinguished Professor of Law and Professor of English at the University of Tulsa and co-edited the James Joyce Quarterly. Spoo earned his BA in English from Lawrence University, followed by a MA and PhD in English from Princeton University. He also holds a JD from Yale Law School and has served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor on the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. His research interests blend literature, law, and intellectual property, with a focus on modern Irish writers, particularly James Joyce and Oscar Wilde. Spoo has contributed significantly to the law-and-literature movement and modernist studies. He has participated in landmark legal cases concerning copyright issues affecting scholars and creative artists. His publications include 'James Joyce's Language History: Dedalus's Nightmare' and jointly edited collections of letters between James Joyce and Ezra Pound. Spoo is also completing works on the intersection of law and modern literary figures, exploring copyright laws and their implications for intellectual property. He has received several fellowships including a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship and teaching awards at the University of Tulsa.
