Biography

Robert Stuart is an Associate Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and both a Master of Arts and a PhD from the University of Toronto. Stuart began his position at UWA in 1975 after researching in Paris during 1973-1974. He taught various units in modern European history, particularly focusing on cultural and intellectual history, and retired at the end of 2017. Throughout his career, he has contributed significantly to studies on French Marxism and the ideological dimensions of contemporary fantasy literature. His notable publications include works such as 'Marxism and Work: Ideology, Class, French Socialism, Republic' and 'Marxism and National Identity at the French Fin de Siècle'. In 2022, he published 'Tolkien, Race, Racism in Middle-earth'. Additionally, he was involved in administrative roles, including acting as Head of the School of Humanities and chairing the History Program.
