Biography

Robert E. Tarjan is a James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor at Princeton University, having joined the faculty in 1985. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Stanford University in 1972, along with a master’s degree in the same field in 1971, and earned his bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology. His academic experience includes assistant professorships at Cornell University and Stanford University, as well as a Miller Research Fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley. He received the ACM Turing Award in 1986 for his fundamental contributions to the design and analysis of algorithms and data structures, along with the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize established by the International Mathematical Union for outstanding contributions to the mathematical aspects of information sciences. His honors include the Distinguished Alumni Award from Caltech in 2010, the Edelman Award from INFORMS in 2009, and fellowships from several prestigious organizations, reflecting his significant impact on theoretical computer science.
