Biography

Robert Ian Thompson joined the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary as an Assistant Professor in September 1998 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2003. He served as Chair of the Department’s Graduate Program from 2003 to 2007 and is currently the Assistant Head and Undergraduate Program Director for the department. He is also involved externally, chairing the Division of Physics Education for the Canadian Association of Physicists and serving as Secretary-Treasurer for the Division on Atomic & Molecular Physics. Dr. Thompson was awarded the CAP Medal for Excellence in Teaching in 2007, a prestigious recognition in Canada for post-secondary educators in physics. His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Laser Physics from the University of Toronto and a BSc (Hons) in Physics from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on quantum information science and various areas of experimental atomic, molecular, optical physics, including ion-molecule interactions and coherence effects in optical processes. He has a notable research affiliation with the Quantum Optics Research Group at the University of Calgary and is involved with several international collaborations, such as the ALPHA collaboration at CERN, where he contributes to efforts in trapping and studying antihydrogen, as well as ongoing projects related to mass spectrometry and ion processes.
