Dr. Robert Thorp

Biography

Robert Thorp is an Associate Professor in Curriculum Studies at Uppsala University, where he obtained his Ph.D. in History Didactics from Umeå University. He is an internationally active researcher specializing in the relationship between individual and society through the lens of history, focusing on how historical narratives shape contemporary perceptions and influence people's connection to the past. His scholarly work particularly emphasizes historical consciousness as a descriptive, analytical, and normative concept. Thorp's research interests encompass educational media, public history, classroom studies, and the educational relationships to history, with a special focus on Cold War history. He has authored several publications, including his notable works, "Cold War Classroom: International Perspectives Textbooks Memory Practices" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019) and "Uses History in History Education" (Umeå University, 2016). Previously, he has held positions at Dalarna University, Stockholm University, University of Newcastle in Australia, and the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research in Braunschweig, Germany.
