Biography

Robert Tilton is the Chevron Professor and Director of Undergraduate Education in the College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, where he has been a faculty member since 1992. He earned his Bachelor of Chemical Engineering with Distinction from the University of Delaware in 1986, followed by his Master’s and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University in 1987 and 1991, respectively. During his Ph.D. research, he worked under the supervision of Alice Gast and Channing Robertson and was recognized with the Victor K. LaMer Award for Outstanding Graduate Research in Colloid and Surface Chemistry by the American Chemical Society in 1993. His postdoctoral research was conducted at the Department of Physical Chemistry at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Tilton is a Fellow of both the American Chemical Society and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He has held several leadership positions within the American Chemical Society Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry. His research focuses on complex fluid interfacial phenomena, with applications in environmental nanotechnology and pulmonary drug delivery. His work has significant implications for developing efficient emulsifiers and understanding the dynamics of macromolecules, surfactants, and nanoparticles in fluid media.
