Biography

Dr. Robert Whittington is the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Development, Mentorship, and Recognition at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM). He is a member of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at DGSOM and has previously served as the Vice Chair for Faculty Development at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). Dr. Whittington received his medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and completed his residency training in anesthesiology at Presbyterian Hospital in New York, where he was also the chief resident. He has significant clinical experience as a general neuro-anesthesiologist with particular interests in geriatric anesthesia and played a key role in launching liver transplantation programs at Columbia in the late 1990s. His research primarily focuses on cognitive postoperative disorders in older adults and includes NIH-funded studies examining tau-related neurofibrillary pathology and its impact on surgery-induced inflammation. Dr. Whittington has published extensively in high-impact journals and presented at both national and international meetings. He has also developed innovative mentoring programs to promote diversity and inclusion in academic medicine.
