Biography

Professor Robert Wilkins graduated with a degree in Physiology from University College in 1990. He subsequently undertook a research degree supervision under Professor Clive Ellory and Dr. Andrew Hall at the Laboratory of Physiology, studying cellular physiology of cartilage. He successfully completed his D.Phil. and was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship at Christ Church. He held fixed-term Fellowships at Trinity and Wadham and was associated with a Research Fellowship from the Arthritis Research Campaign. In January 2004, he was appointed to a University Lectureship in Epithelial Physiology. His current research examines altered membrane transport activity associated with cellular dysfunction in diseases, specifically addressing the influence of physical and chemical factors on cartilage ion homeostasis and the role of cell volume regulation in epithelial cancer progression. At St Edmund Hall, Dr. Wilkins holds an American Fellowship in Physiology and serves as a medical tutor, providing tutorials for a group of four to five Medicine students and Biomedical Sciences students each year, covering cellular systems physiology. Additionally, he is the Director of the Biomedical Sciences Course in the Medical Sciences Division and a co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of Medical Sciences, 2nd edition (OUP).
