Biography

Robert L. Winkler is the James B. Duke Professor Emeritus at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, and holds an appointment in the Department of Statistical Science. He has been a member of the decision sciences area at Fuqua and served as Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Research from 1991 to 1997. Professor Winkler earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the Duke faculty in 1984, he was a Distinguished Professor of Quantitative Business Analysis at Indiana University and held visiting positions at the University of Washington, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, Austria, Stanford University, and INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France and Singapore. His primary research areas include decision analysis, risk analysis, statistics, and forecasting. He has published over 200 articles and books and has received support from the National Science Foundation. Professor Winkler has been awarded the Frank P. Ramsey Medal for his significant contributions to decision analysis and the NCNB Faculty Award from the Fuqua School of Business. His research focuses on probability forecasting, combining forecasts, decision modeling, and Bayesian statistical models for inference in decision-making. He has held several editorial positions and served as an officer in professional organizations. At Fuqua, he has taught courses in statistics and decision analysis in both MBA and EMBA programs, and was a recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award for the GEMBA class. He teaches a Ph.D. course in Bayesian inference for decision-making.
