Bob Zimmerman served as Director of the Charles River Watershed Association from 1990 to 2018. During his tenure, the CRWA became a leading authority on water science in urban watersheds, developing programs to address combined sewer overflows, stormwater pollution, flooding, water quality, low instream flow, nutrient loading, habitat protection and restoration, sustainable development, and the economics of water infrastructure. His critical work has included early recognition of urban infrastructure, particularly in water systems, which are the root cause of many problems in megalopolitan regions. As a result, Zimmerman focused CRWA’s resources on developing distributed wastewater infrastructure that uses sewage to generate renewable energy and reclaimed water, significantly enhancing flood control and drought resilience. He coauthored 'Transformation: Water Infrastructure for a Sustainable Future' and a blog series on the subject. His work has also led to a total maximum daily load analysis for phosphorus in the Charles River, helping to identify major nutrient sources and contributing to the development of a phosphorus trading program that aims to reduce costs and capture stormwater flooding. Before joining CRWA, Zimmerman was the co-founder and Headmaster of the National Sports Academy in Lake Placid, which provides training for winter sports athletes. He earned a Master's degree in English and a Bachelor's degree in English and History from Central Michigan University.
