Biography

Robertson Parkman is a pediatric immunologist whose research focuses on the immunological consequences of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, including acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), immune reconstitution, and the use of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to treat genetic diseases. His laboratory has investigated the role of chronic GVHD as an autoimmune disease linked to histocompatibility antigens shared between donors and recipients. His observations have led to assessments of the role of thymic dysfunction in the pathogenesis of chronic GVHD. Furthermore, he has explored the use of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as an initial treatment for primary immune deficiency diseases and metabolic diseases, which has resulted in his involvement in early gene transfer clinical trials.
