Robin Allshire is a Professor of Chromosome Biology at the University of Edinburgh, where he also serves as a Wellcome Trust Principal Research Fellow at the Wellcome Centre for Cell Biology. He obtained his B.A. in Genetics from Trinity College Dublin in 1981 and received his Ph.D. from the MRC Mammalian Genome Unit at the University of Edinburgh in 1985. Following his doctoral studies, he undertook a postdoctoral fellowship at the MRC Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh from 1985 to 1989 and worked as a Visiting Scientist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories in New York from 1989 to 1990. His academic career includes positions as Junior Group Leader and later as Senior Scientist at the MRC Human Genetics Unit from 1990 to 2002. Allshire's research is at the forefront of understanding the epigenetic mechanisms that mediate antifungal resistance, particularly focusing on chromatin-based epigenetic changes that contribute to pathogenic fungi's adaptability to environmental stresses. His groundbreaking work has transformed the understanding of antifungal resistance, identifying new genetic and genomic approaches to address this global health challenge. His contributions to science have been acknowledged through various awards, including being an EMBO Member since 1998 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2005.
