Biography

Robin Bates (Ph.D., University of Chicago, 2015) is a historian of modern France and the Francophone world. His work focuses on political culture in the decades following the Revolution of 1789. In 2015, he earned his Ph.D. in the Department of History at the University of Chicago, where his doctoral dissertation became the current book project titled 'Regimes of Education: Pedagogy and Political Reconstruction in Post-Revolutionary France, 1789-1848.' This ongoing project examines a time of great instability and upheaval, analyzing the theory and practice of education and how it interlinked with crucial relationships of power—between parents and children, masters and slaves, and men and women, as well as the ways political leaders engaged with the people to envision and enact a new order. Bates has published extensively on themes surrounding race, history, and memory within the context of French imperialism, and his works include articles in notable journals and a co-authored book on public history in Nova Scotia.
