Dr. Robin Gurwitch

Biography

Dr. Robin Gurwitch is a Professor Emeritus at Duke University, affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Center for Child and Family Health. With a doctorate in Clinical/Medical Psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Gurwitch has a distinguished career focused on understanding and supporting children in the aftermath of trauma related to disasters. Following the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, she has been dedicated to enhancing the resilience of children affected by various crisis events including terrorism and natural disasters, as well as stressors related to military deployment. Dr. Gurwitch has served on numerous state and national committees, and has acted as a subject-matter expert in disaster mental health. Her expertise has been sought by governmental bodies such as the National Bio-Defense Science Board and the Department of Health and Human Services. A prolific writer and educator, she has co-authored numerous book chapters and articles addressing trauma, resilience, and preparedness. Dr. Gurwitch is actively involved with the American Red Cross and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, and has played an integral role in developing materials and training programs focused on disaster mental health. Currently, she serves as a Co-Principal Investigator on a grant aimed at enhancing wellness among disaster-affected youth, and as the Director of the PCIT & CARE Training Program at the Center for Child & Family Health.
