Biography

Robin Klemm is an Associate Professor and Tutorial Fellow in Physiology at Somerville College, University of Oxford. He leads the Klemm lab, which explores the molecular basis of lipid metabolism, particularly within fat-storing cells known as adipocytes. His research investigates how lipid transport and membrane contact sites influence cell fate, differentiation, and response to nutrient stress. Robin completed his PhD work at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, focusing on the mechanisms that sort lipids within the secretory pathway. His work led to the development of innovative organelle isolation methods and mass spectrometry-based analysis of lipidomes in eukaryotic organelles. He then completed postdoctoral work at Harvard Medical School, where he reconstituted ER fusion pathways and elucidated the role of GTPases in lipid droplet biology and overall lipid metabolism. In 2020, Robin moved his lab to the University of Oxford, where his group's research has significant implications for understanding and developing new therapies for type II diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases.
