Biography

Professor Robin Smith is the Director of the Centre for Process Integration within the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science at the University of Manchester. He has extensive industrial experience that includes working with Rohm & Haas on process investigations and production design, as well as with ICI on process modeling and integration. He has been a consultant on various process integration projects across different industries. Professor Smith is a published author, notably of 'Chemical Process Design Integration', published by Wiley. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Chemical Engineers in the UK and is recognized as a Chartered Engineer. In 1992, he received the Hanson Medal from the Institution of Chemical Engineers for his work on waste minimization, and in 2018, he was awarded the Sargent Medal for his leadership in pioneering research that has advanced the principles and methodologies of process integration. His research interests center on energy conservation, design of heat recovery systems, and the optimization of utility and distillation systems to support sustainable processes in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
