Biography

Robin Steedman is a Lecturer in Creative Industries at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on global creative cultural industries, specifically examining issues of diversity and inequality in media production, distribution, and viewership. She has a particular interest in the creative industries in Africa, with current research centered on Kenya and Ghana. Robin holds a BA in International Development and Religious Studies from McGill University and an MA in African Studies from SOAS University of London. She completed her PhD at SOAS, where her dissertation explored the work of female filmmakers in Kenya. Before joining the University of Glasgow, she worked as a Creative Economy Engagement Fellow at the University of Sheffield and as a Postdoctoral researcher at Copenhagen Business School. Her academic contributions have been published in prestigious journals such as Poetics, Information, Communication & Society, and Cultural Trends. Additionally, she authored the book 'Creative Hustling: Women Making and Distributing Films in Nairobi,' published by MIT Press in 2023.
