Biography

Rochelle Burgess is a qualitative social scientist whose work focuses on advancing community-led approaches to mental health improvement globally. With a particular emphasis on how communities navigate and respond to the political economy of poor health, her research highlights community-led efforts to address the impacts of broader development issues such as poverty, gender, and racialisation. Rochelle has contributed her methodological mental health expertise to numerous projects aimed at developing and evaluating community mental health interventions in various contexts, including South Africa, Colombia, the UK, and Zimbabwe. She is a leading voice in the field of Social Interventions in Global Mental Health, and over the past decade, she has focused extensively on mental ill-health and the wellbeing experiences of common mental disorders in adverse contexts. As a scholar-activist, she is committed to transforming the academic landscape to promote a more equitable world. Additionally, Rochelle is the Deputy Director of the UCL Centre for Global Non-Communicable Diseases and has founded UCL's Global Network on Mental Health and Child Marriage. Her affiliations include being a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and a member of the ESRC peer review college and the UK Trauma Council.
