Biography

Rodney Devenish is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Monash University, with a primary research focus on the process of autophagy. Autophagy is vital for eukaryotic cells to degrade and recycle parts of their internal structure, including organelles, through specialized compartments such as vacuoles in yeast and lysosomes in mammals. In yeast, autophagy predominantly contributes to cellular homeostasis by removing damaged organelles, whereas in multicellular organisms like mammals, it plays a crucial role in programmed cell death and various other processes. Alterations in autophagy levels are associated with numerous pathological conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, myopathies, different forms of cancer, and infections by pathogenic bacteria and viruses. His current research involves selective autophagy for cellular organelles, aiming to understand the quality control mechanisms in organelle function. He is also investigating how microbial pathogens, specifically Burkholderia pseudomallei, evade autophagy to survive within host cells during infections.
