Dr. Roel Konijnendijk

Biography

Roel Konijnendijk is a Darby Fellow in Ancient History at Lincoln College, University of Oxford. He completed his BA and MPhil at Leiden University, followed by a PhD at University College London, which he finished in 2015. His academic career includes teaching and research positions at institutions such as Birkbeck, the Institute of Historical Research, Warwick, Leiden, Oxford, and Edinburgh. His research interests focus on the various forms of warfare in the Greek world and how they were shaped by social, political, and cultural forces. He explores themes like Classical Greek military thought and practices, as well as encounters between Greek and Persian military systems. He has published on topics including Greek tactics, Athenian democracy, Spartan traditions, and historiography in Greek military studies. Roel offers a wide array of courses in Ancient History, covering Greek and Roman history, and teaches specialized topics such as Achaemenids in Classical Athenian democracy and culture.
