Biography

Roel Schutgens studied Dutch Law at Radboud University Nijmegen, graduating cum laude in 2004. From 2004 to 2009, he was a PhD Fellow in the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law at Radboud University, defending his PhD thesis 'Unlawful Legislation' in 2009, which focused on forms of judicial review within the Dutch legal system. In 2010, he was appointed Full Professor of Jurisprudence and has served as faculty dean since January 2022. His research interests include state liability, legislation, judicial review, and general constitutional law, particularly in politically sensitive contexts. Professor Schutgens is actively involved in the academic community as a member of the board of Themis, the oldest Law Journal in the Netherlands, and serves as a Deputy Justice at the Hague Appellate Court. He has held editorial board positions for various law journals, including 'Overheid & Aansprakelijkheid' and 'RMThemis' since 2011, and he also teaches postgraduate courses.
