Roger Bagnall is an Emeritus Professor of Ancient History and the Leon Levy Director Emeritus at the Institute for the Study of Ancient World at New York University. He joined the NYU faculty in 2007 and has taught for 33 years, previously serving as Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Chair of the Department of Classics. His research specializes in the social and economic history of Hellenistic, Roman, and Late Antique Egypt. Bagnall has held leadership positions in the fields of classics and papyrology and is a co-founder of a multi-university consortium focused on the Advanced Papyrological Information System. He is best known for his influential works, including 'Egypt in Late Antiquity' (1993), 'Demography of Roman Egypt' (1994, co-authored with Bruce Frier), 'Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient History' (1995), 'Early Christian Books in Egypt' (2009), and 'Everyday Writing in the Graeco-Roman East' (2010). He edited a volume of ostraka from Trimithis, inaugurating ISAW's series of digital books. Bagnall directs NYU's excavation project at Amheida in Dakhla Oasis, Egypt, and his latest book, 'Oasis City', presents the results of the Amheida excavations. He is a member of several prestigious societies and received an honorary doctorate from Université de Paris-Sorbonne in October 2016. Bagnall served as the general editor of a 13-volume Encyclopedia of Ancient History, published by Wiley-Blackwell in November 2012, which is regularly updated.
