Biography

Roger Maes is a Professor and Section Chief specializing in Virology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University. He received his DVM from the State University of Ghent in 1971, followed by a Master of Science from Purdue University in 1977 and a PhD from Purdue University in 1979. His research focuses on the interaction of herpesviruses with their natural hosts, utilizing the feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) model to explore virulence and immune-evasion determinants. He studies immune responses to FHV-1, including both innate and adaptive immunity, and has conducted significant research into the molecular pathogenesis of the virus. He is currently investigating the identification of FHV-1 genes that affect host modulation and the development of novel modified live vaccines. In addition to research, Maes is actively involved in teaching interests related to General Virology and Diagnostic Virology Methodology, and he has co-founded and served on various committees within the veterinary diagnostic community.
