Roger Edwin McLendon is a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Neurosurgery at Duke University, where he is also a member of the Duke Cancer Institute. His work focuses on brain tumors, which affect more than 20,000 Americans annually, with glioblastoma being one of the most common. He and his colleagues have dedicated their efforts to translating bench discoveries regarding genetic mutations and aberrant protein expressions found in brain tumors to better understand the etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of these malignancies. Among his significant contributions is the identification of Isocitrate Dehydrogenase (IDH1 IDH2) mutations, which serve as a good prognosis marker for gliomas in adults, and the development of a clinical test offered at Duke University. McLendon has also collaborated with the Toronto Sick Kids Hospital to establish prognostic testing for childhood medulloblastomas and other tumors. His education includes an M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia and extensive training at Duke University.
