Biography

Rohan Lewis is a Professor of Placental Integrative Physiology at the University of Southampton, where he leads the Placental Research Laboratory. His team investigates the vital role of the placenta in supporting healthy fetal development and how placental dysfunction can affect health throughout life. The research employs an integrative and interdisciplinary approach to understand placental function, integrating laboratory studies, transport metabolism, advanced 3D imaging, and computational modeling. Collaborating with experts from engineering, mathematics, and physics, the team explores mechanisms underlying specific placental functions and how they interact to create a functional placenta capable of supporting a healthy pregnancy. His group is involved in large-scale population studies, including the Southampton Women’s Survey and the MAVIDOS study, aiming to uncover environmental factors that influence placental development and function and their impacts on health at birth, thereby contributing to a better understanding of long-term health trajectories.
