Professor Roland Pail specializes in Astronomical Physical Geodesy and has made significant contributions to the understanding of Earth's gravity field through physical and numerical geodesy. His research focuses on global and regional modeling of gravity data obtained from satellites, which plays a crucial role in defining elevation systems and monitoring climate-relevant mass transport processes, ocean circulation, rising sea levels, and the melting of ice masses. Pail is also involved in the design and implementation of next-generation gravity field missions. He studied geophysics at the University of Vienna and earned his doctorate in engineering sciences from TU Graz in 1999, after which he served as an assistant professor at TU Graz until 2009. In 2010, he was appointed Chair of Astronomical Physical Geodesy at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and has since been an active member of several committees, including the International Association of Geodesy. Pail has also contributed as a speaker for the DFG Research Training Group GRK 2698 “UPLIFT” and holds memberships in various national and international committees.
