Roland Pieters studied organic chemistry at the University of Groningen, Netherlands, where he obtained his MSc in 1990. He worked as an exchange student under Prof. Ben Feringa at Trinity University, San Antonio, USA. He completed his Ph.D. at MIT under Prof. Julius Rebek Jr. in 1995 and then held a post-doctoral position with Prof. Francois Diederich at ETH-Zürich. After a further post-doctoral stay at the University of Groningen, he joined Utrecht University as an assistant professor in 1998. He became an associate professor in 2005 and was promoted to full professor in 2010 after obtaining a VICI grant in 2008. His research interests at the Department of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery focus on glycodrugs and the study of protein-carbohydrate interactions using multivalent systems. His work targets viral and bacterial adhesion proteins, galectins, glycosidases, and incorporates the use of glyco-peptide microarrays for chemical biology and drug discovery.
