Prof. Roland Rad investigates the molecular basis of cancer evolution to advance the understanding of processes such as malignant transformation, metastasis, and drug resistance. He leads an interdisciplinary team working at the interface of structural and functional genomics, computational biology, and translational medicine. His research focuses on the development of genetic technologies and disease models that enable large-scale perturbation of complex biological systems. The overarching goal of his work is to harness discoveries from basic research for cancer therapy. He studied medicine in Budapest, Dresden, and Munich, and earned his doctorate from the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He was clinically trained in internal medicine at the TUM University Hospital and conducted postdoctoral research at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge. In 2012, he held a professorship in translational oncology at TUM and led a research group at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg. In 2019, he was appointed the current chair and director of the Institute of Molecular Oncology and Functional Genomics at TUM.
