Biography

Roman Melnyk is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on bacterial toxins, drug discovery, bacterial pathogenesis, and membrane proteins. He explores how bacterial protein toxins contribute to the establishment and propagation of infectious diseases. These potent toxins, including diphtheria, tetanus, and anthrax toxins, are multifunctional proteins capable of penetrating host cells and forming protein-conducting pores in the host membrane. Melnyk's research utilizes chemical biology, targeted drug discovery approaches, and molecular biophysics to identify and validate host and toxin targets, aiming to discover small molecule hits for further development. Additionally, he is working on developing toxin-delivery platforms to transport non-cell penetrant therapeutics into cells, overcoming a significant challenge in protein-based drug delivery. He also holds a senior scientist position in Molecular Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children.
