Biography

Prof. Romana Gerner's research focuses on microbiome functional molecular interactions and the immune system. Her work aims to understand how commensal and pathogenic microbes shape the immune system and their roles in the development and progression of inflammatory and malignant diseases. By integrating basic and translational research, her team seeks to enhance clinical understanding of the microbiome's significance in health and disease, developing microbiome-based therapeutic approaches. Gerner studied human medicine at the Medical University of Innsbruck and began her PhD studies in Infectious Diseases and Immunology in 2012, focusing on the influence of the microbiome on chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and developing new therapeutic options. Concurrently, she started her clinical training in internal medicine at the University Hospital Innsbruck. In 2018, she became a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California San Diego's Department of Pediatrics, Division of Host-Microbe Systems. There, she investigated the influence of commensal microbes on the mucosal immune system and developed a vaccination strategy for eradicating pathogens associated with inflammatory bowel disease. In November 2023, Romana Gerner was appointed Professor of Clinical Microbiome at TUM and continues to be clinically active at Klinikum rechts der Isar.
