Professor Dr. Romina Palermo

Biography

Romina Palermo is a Professor and Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia, holding a Ph.D. in Psychology (Distinction) from the same institution. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (Honours) from the University of Wollongong. Dr. Palermo's research focuses on understanding the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms that underlie person perception, studying aspects such as facial identity, age, sex, and emotional expression. She investigates the complexities involved in face and body perception as well as voice recognition, emphasizing the neural underpinnings of these processes. Her work extends to typically developing individuals and those with atypical development, including children and adults with conditions such as prosopagnosia and autism. She is passionate about contributing to the scientific understanding of person perception and its impacts, involving neuropsychological studies examining brain injuries and psychopathologies that alter perception. In recognition of her contributions to the field, she collaborates on various research projects aimed at enhancing knowledge and practical applications related to face processing and recognition, particularly during challenging social contexts like the COVID-19 pandemic.
