Biography

Rommel G. Tirona is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Western University. His research laboratory focuses on the molecular determinants of drug response and toxicity, aiming to characterize and understand the factors that govern inter-individual differences in drug pharmacokinetics. This research includes studying transport proteins and their impact on tissue drug distribution and elimination, especially concerning charge and lipid solubility. His laboratory employs a variety of biochemical, molecular biological, and genetic methods using cellular and animal models, complemented with studies in humans. Current investigations include examining the role of drug transporters in skeletal muscle toxicity related to cholesterol-lowering medications, and exploring the interplay between transporters and metabolizing enzymes for quantitative predictions of drug pharmacokinetics in vitro and in vivo.
