Dr. Ron Levi

Biography

Ron Levi is a Professor in the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and holds a Distinguished Professorship in the Department of Sociology at the University of Toronto. He also has a courtesy cross-appointment in the Faculty of Law and is a Permanent Visiting Professor at the University of Copenhagen. His research focuses on the intersection of politics, culture, sociology, law, and justice, examining concepts such as police violence and human rights. Levi is actively engaged in multiple projects, including a historical analysis of police violence from the 1950s to 1960s, the hopes of individuals arrested for police reform, and the ethical implications of bureaucracy within international human rights and criminal law. He has taught various courses addressing themes such as police violence, globalization, and the sociology of law. Levi has served as the Chair of the Sociology of Law Section at the American Sociological Association and has held the position of Secretary for the Law Society Association. He is a recipient of various accolades, including the Chevalier l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques from the French Government and the Ludwik Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize. In 2022, he received the Global Educator Award from the University of Toronto.
