Professor Ron Thomson completed his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Alberta in 2007, having earlier obtained a BA in Political Science from the University of Calgary in 1995 and an MEd in TESL from the University of Alberta in 2001. His substantial cross-cultural experience, gained through living among the Siksiká in Southern Alberta and the Muhajirs and Punjabis in Pakistan, as well as through studies in India and volunteering in the Dominican Republic, informs his professional work. He has taught English in various contexts, including Korea and Oman, and currently focuses on the development of second language (L2) pronunciation fluency. His research examines how L2 learners process L2 sounds and the role of their first language (L1) plays in this process. Additionally, Professor Thomson is interested in computer-mediated instruction to facilitate the rapid development of L2 speech perception and production. He teaches courses such as Introduction to Phonetics, Introduction to Phonology, Applied Phonetics, Research Practicum, and Honours Thesis courses in Linguistics and TESL.
