Biography

Ronald Joseph Ellis, MD, PhD, is a board-certified neurologist specializing in the adult neurological diagnosis and treatment of patients with HIV/AIDS. Based at the Department of Neurosciences at UC San Diego School of Medicine, he has a focus on the neurological manifestations of HIV infection, particularly dementia and neurocognitive disorders. Dr. Ellis also addresses other neurological conditions influenced by HIV, including stroke, epilepsy, and movement disorders. He is actively involved in numerous clinical trials supported by the National Institutes of Health, evaluating new treatments for HIV-related neurocognitive disorders. Additionally, he serves as the associate director of the NIMH-funded P03 HIV Neurobehavioral Research Programs and as the co-director of the multisite CNS HIV Antiretroviral Therapy Effects Research (CHARTER) study, which investigates the effects of antiretroviral therapy on cognitive function in HIV-infected individuals. A graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, he completed his residency and fellowship at UC San Diego and has contributed significantly to the global research on HIV neurology.
