Biography

Ronald Fernando Garcia Ruiz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at MIT. His research focuses on the development of laser spectroscopy techniques to investigate the properties of subatomic particles using atoms and molecules that contain short-lived radioactive nuclei. This experimental work provides unique insights into the fundamental forces of nature, the properties of nuclear matter, and the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Ronald grew up in a small town in the Colombian mountains and later moved to Bogotá, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in physics in 2009 from Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He earned his Master's degree in Physics in 2011 from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México before moving to Belgium to pursue his PhD at KU Leuven, which he conducted at CERN. After completing his PhD, he worked as a Research Associate at the University of Manchester and was awarded a CERN Research Fellowship in 2018, where he led experimental programs aimed at advancing the field of nuclear science and atomic physics. Ronald's contributions have been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Sloan Research Fellowship and the IUPAP Young Scientist Prize in Nuclear Physics.
